Photos by Sarah ShowalterHalloween came early this year. Children in the cutest costumes showed up to practice trick or treating. The hallways were decorated in themes such as Disney, Candyland, etc. Mrs. Payne blew up pumpkins, and our school's orchestra contributed by playing some spooky tunes! It was one fun night!!

Becca Laird There are always new trends floating around, whether it be the latest shoes, the most popular app, or even the newest music floating around, there is always something. For those who have not heard about these new fads, here they are!
Over this summer there have been many clothing items that have become the new favorite thing to wear. There are Adidas Jogger Sweatpants that have been known to be “quite comfy and a great way to go for a lazy day” said Zoe May. For shoes, there are sandals called Birkenstocks that have the hearts of many teen girls. Kennedy Lawson said that they are “very comfortable and have a nice Earthy look to them”. But we all know that an outfit cannot be complete without a few pieces of jewelry added to it. A pearl-choker is the new way to go about rocking a necklace. Some of these necklaces have been ordered online while the creative and artistic teenagers have actually been making them at home. Val Severns has said that these necklaces make her feel “hippie-like and connected to the Earth with its classic look”. We are not stopping there though. Things are always changing in the field of social media and music. A new app, Pokémon GO, has captured everybody’s attention over the summer. This app has made going outside and being active so much easier due to the fact that the player has to walk around to different “Poké-stops” to catch ‘em all! There are also multiple artists popping up everywhere with great music but this summer, one band has seemed to have captured everyone’s hearts. The one and only Twenty-One Pilots has recently released new music and during this break making “Ride” and “Stressed Out” to be some of the most listened to songs of the year! Now just because these styles are in right now does not mean that they will have to go away anytime soon! But, it also means that there will always be new fads next summer that everybody can love. If these trends are not your style and just are not for you, be creative and make some of your own. Somebody else might find your ideas great and they could possibly be written about next year!
*These dates are general. Check with your school to see when their application is due.
Karissa Hunt The ACT is the all knowing exam that decides your future. Fail the ACT, fail life, become trash. Anyways, the ACT (American College Testing) doesn’t have to control your life (I was kidding earlier). Yes, it’s important and you do have to put in effort, unless you’re a rare breed of Sean Meredith, but still… Besides the normal testing tips of sleeping eight hours and eating breakfast, I’m here to teach you tricks that will supplement your efforts in the classroom and when cramming the night before.
Choose the most concise answer Especially in the English portion, they love putting redundant information in their answers. The longest answer isn’t always the best, so you cannot judge by length. If you do not understand an answer, you are not dumb; it is just the wrong answer, so don’t worry. Plug in the Answer If you are stumped during the Math Section, damage your calculator with your tears. If possible, just plug the answers given into the equation or problem. It is time consuming though, so just use that as a last resort. Always answer the ones you know first and go back. Skim the Passages First of all, you can choose which one to read first. Pick the passage you are most comfortable with, like if you hate fiction don’t start with the prose fiction. Be conscious of time and skim over the passage for main idea and then look at the questions. Answer all of the questions You are not penalized for wrong answers. Only the questions that are right are counted. The chances that at least one of the questions will be right is better than not having a chance. So, when there is five minutes left of the test pick a letter and bubble in the remaining answers. Seriously, it will help. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE The key to scoring well is, sorry to say, practicing and studying. Many people who do not score well on the exam are simply not good test takers and get flustered. Familiarize yourself with the time restrictions, format, and content. Check out ACT Prep books from the library a month before the test. Just reviewing the subject you struggle with most will boost your score. Take the ACT early to get a feel for the test. Practice and take it again. You will see improvement. Complete conflicting viewpoints sections last Science is the last section of the ACT. Perhaps you've already had a silent breakdown by this point and you literally can’t. It’s important to relax and understand you really don’t need to be a quantum physicist to score well. Conflicting Viewpoints takes the most time and is typically harder because you have to comprehend two paragraphs of information. Start with easy to read graphs; you don’t have to read the prompt unless you are confused about the graph, but typically the answers are in the graphs. So remember, conflicting viewpoints last and it is just graphs. When picking a location, pick one that your friends are not going to Yes, it will be scary to go to a location not knowing anyone. But, during the test you’ll feel less competitive to finish first, causing careless mistakes. You will be more focused on your test which will help you recall knowledge and not think about how everyone is saying that Becky has good hair. I can not promise you a 36 on the ACT because of these tips. It is earned by those who focus during classes and comprehend what their weaknesses are. Strengthen your weaknesses. After taking the first ACT reflect, Why did I have too much time during Reading? Perhaps you rushed through the questions, or you just comprehend quickly. Did I run out of time on Math? Then most likely you are taking too much time working through hard problems. Identifying your skills will make you more aware of what needs to be done to get your dream score. Revisit these tips and work with your teachers. I wish all of you the best of luck, but then again, you won’t need it. Asa Carter We should be proud of our band majors. If you do not know they are a very important piece to the big band puzzle. Aubree Wiggins and Alex Beebe Are our band majors for the our band. Aubree has been playing music for almost Eight years .Alex has been playing the trombone and tuba for eight years as well. Aubree plays the flute; she has been playing the flute since the 5th grade and also plays the piccolo since last year. When she played for her solo ensemble she got a distinguished for her performance. Alex says “Being a drum major is a fun combination of waving my arms around like a moron and balancing on dangerously-high podiums. While it requires a large amount of responsibility, the greatest challenge is not imagining myself playing whack a mole while conducting. Aubree and Alex love to be the band majors for the band. Aubree and Alex are leaders for the band and stand in front of the audience and conduct music that they love. Alex says “there are many leaders in the band room, but a drum-major takes on responsibility completely different than playing an instrument out on the field. Conducting, running drills, getting music together and showing a great example for the band are just some of the aspects of being a Drum major.” Aubree will be attending the University of Louisville and studying Music Therapy to use music to help special needs. Music is a great part of everyone's life and influences us in many ways. Music has influenced Aubree to pursue something most people wouldn't do. Alex will be going to JB Speed Engineering School at UofL, “But I plan on playing in the marching band there and eventually being a drum major.” That's why we should congratulate Aubree and Alex for their leadership and performance over the years. Monet Carroll Our Drama Club, here at Jeffersontown High School, performed the Breakfast Club. The Breakfast Club is about five high school students, Andrew Clark (Dylan Williams), John Bender (Dustin Gibson), Allison Reynolds (Mary Taylor and Savannah Everett), Brian Johnson (Thomas Farless), and Claire Standish (Rebecca Laird), who meet in detention one day. The principal, played by Kenneth Brown, wants them to write an essay, and they think they’re in for a boring 8 hours. At first, they argue and fight, but after smoking some marijuana they pour their hearts out to each other. They discuss their fears, their secrets, their emotions, and their problems. The play was March 31st , April 1st, and, April 2nd. After performing another great play, A Raisin in the Sun last year, after a few years of not performing any plays. The Drama club has stepped up with a great, new appearance. They worked very hard to perform this play with Ms. Bowen’s guidance. Great job to the drama club, you guys did an excellent job! Eddy Graham Jeffersontown High School will be hosting the 2016 Skills USA competition, displaying the talents of our trade programs and competing with other students from around the district. The competition will recognize Welding, Machine Tool, CADD, and our Robotics Team. Rommie Kader, from the welding program says, “I am pretty excited to see what we can accomplish. We’ve worked hard all year and it’s no surprise that we are ready for this, which we are.” And he couldn’t be anymore correct. In fact, every class has taken on special precautions to make sure the Chargers come out on top. “This is the best group of kids this welding program has seen in years, in my opinion”, says Jerry Burke, welding instructor. Baxter Meurer from the Machine Tool program seems to have a brighter look for the competition as well. “Totally gonna do awesome. We’re J-town”, he says. Hopes could not be higher for our performance. The competition will display every skill in every trade skill- from welds to manufactured parts to robotics. If you are involved in any of our big trades, you know the seriousness taken to be the very best in JCPS. Every day is filled with the effort of those who want to build a greater future for us all. Go Chargers!

This is J-town’s first year having a Future Problem Solving Team and Mrs. Mulder’s first time sponsoring. The Problem Solvers are met with an issue, like natural disasters or disappearing languages, and are expected to come up with a solution and action plan in a two hour time span. It is a very particular and long process. They have to think up 16 challenges and 16 possible solutions before picking the best one and making a plan. Janae Boyd, Andrew Puckett, Alex Beebe, and Melanie Brown competed in Districts and Andrensia Flowers contributed by putting together a presentation for the team. “Four very different students came together to make tinfoil beards and stupid skits while eating oranges,” says a source who wishes to remain anonymous. J-town was only beat by St. X and Mercy who have been competing for many years. Overall, we are quite proud of our thinking Chargers! Malachai Laws Social media over the summer has been booming with celebrity drama to new movies coming out. Almost everyone was talking about something over the internet, and I am here to tell you what the people were talking about.
Starting with movies. Insidious: Chapter 3 came out in June 5th was a pretty satisfying prequel sequel with tons of scream wrenching jumpscares and a well put plot. A young teenage girl named Quinn is trying to follow her dreams by acting, but is still trying to move on from her deceased mother. After trying to contact her mother by the psychic going wrong Quinn soon after gets hit by a car, crippling her in the process and with her being practically vulnerable the bad spirit take its chance to attack Quinn in any way possible. Jurassic World bringing adult nerds and their childhood memories to the movie theater for another blockbuster sequel that came out in June 12th. DNA from other dinosaurs that were still brought to life from mosquitos that were trapped in tree sap, the park opens back to the public and new technology. But that's not the only thing that is new and coming soon. Scientist come up with a hybrid dinosaur to give the park more thrill to the people, soon after a mistake with the false hybrid escape, the hybrid escapes with its cunning plan to head to where all of the people are. On its rampage through the park the park manager nephews are lost and she has to look for them. We the fans also get to see more of the island that we have never got to see in the other 3 films and seeing the old jurassic park. Celebrities are one thing we talk in our time, but celebrity drama is another thing that we will remember. From Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj to Drake and Meek Mill those were the two most talked about celebrity beef over the internet. Breaking down the Miley and Nicki drama, Miley in her interview on a tonight talk show, Miley was comparing Nicki to Iggy Azalea (Nicki`s enemy) and actually called her “trash.” So at the MTV Video Music Awards, Nicki obviously wanted to confront Miley by saying ““And now back to this b— that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press,” Minaj snapped. “Miley, what’s good?!” This spread across the internet quickly to where this scene is on pillows and shirts. Before the beef with Miley, Nicki was beefing with Taylor Swift. The MTV Video Music Awards announced the nominees for Video Of The Year, and with none of the nominees being any of Nicki's songs such as “Feeling Myself” or “Anaconda.” Nicki soon afterwards tweeted “If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year” Seeming like Nicki was referring to Taylor Swift which in my opinion was probably toward Taylor (Music Video “Bad Blood” did mainly only have women). |
