Sarah Howard If you have somehow been spared from the harsh media-overlord that Pokémon Go is, Pokémon Go is widely popular location-based augmented reality game made by Niatonic for iOS and Android devices. Players use the GPS on their mobile device to locate, capture, battle, and train virtual creatures called Pokémon. This is a virtual reality game but the actions this game are causing is very real. Pokémon go is causing gangs, car accidents, turf wars, murders, and even some conspiracies have aroused about the game.
The game allows people to experience the thrill of being able to be a Pokémon trainer. A lot of competitiveness has sprouted because everyone wants “To be the very best.” One of the best examples of this are the teams, Mystic, Valor, and Instinct, of which you can become a part of. Once you reach level five the game lets you choose between team Instinct, a team that is instinct driven, team Valor, team, that values strength over everything, and team Mystic, that values brains over bronze. Once you choose one of these teams you are not only fighting to become the best trainer but you are now doing it for the teams you choose and against the others, which blossoms the competitiveness. USA Today has been keeping up with the multiple crimes linked to the game, I have chosen the ones that jump out to me the most. In Missouri there was a string of armed robberies linked to four teens that used the lure feature of Pokémon Go to lure the unfortunate players. In Baltimore, a man was driving while playing and he crashed into a cop car. Outside San Diego, two men ignored warning signs, climbed the fence and fell from cliff. These two men were rescued by the local fire department with ropes and harnesses. A young male in Guatemala, Jerso Lopez de Leon, was shot and killed for breaking into a home to catch a Pokémon. The top 5 conspiracies of Pokémon Go were the most shocking to me. The first of the conspiracies was that the reality game is the big wireless carriers scheme to have customers pay more for data. Another one was that the game is to keep us distracted from the new so that we do not riot. And finally, the game is an agent of capitalism to get us into stores and buy stuff.

Valorie Severns This Olympic season, the United States took home a total of 86 medals, 28 of them being gold. With breaking and setting new world records, it seems as if the US Olympic results could not get better. Olympic training athletes spend countless hours upon hours working towards their dream, to compete in the world wide Olympics. The lucky ones will reach their goal and will bring home gold, creating tons and tons of celebration nationwide.
Hundreds of female and male swimmers train to make the national swimming team. Once they make the national team, they have a pretty good chance of making the Olympic team as well. Swimmers must be at least 16 years of age, or turning 16 within the calendar year, to compete in the Olympics. The average age for men swimmers in the Olympics is around 24 and for women it’s around 22 or 23. Katie Ledecky is the youngest Olympian on the team at just 19. The US swimming team brought home an astounding 33 medals, 16 being gold. If you’ve seen any amount of news headlines or media, you would know that the Girls Gymnastic team dominates the game. Simone Biles is easiest the most well-known new member of the group with the fact that she has her own floor move named after her. She has a running start into a round-off back handspring then pulls a double lay half out, and nails it every time. This was one of the factors that won her 4 gold medals. Returning gold medalist Gabby Duglas has also had her own headlines, but not quite for the same reason. She had a controversial action when the picture sparked the internet of her not putting her hand over her heart for the national anthem. But in the long run, the US women’s gymnastics took home a total of 12 medals, 4 being gold as well. US Olympic teams definitely represented by taking athletes as a whole and showing people across the world what the US brings to the table. Hard training athletes each year work towards showing and competing for gold, and bringing home gold, to the home of the brave. Krima Salvi Money! Money! Money! Yes, you guessed it right. The matter is all about money. Have you heard about Say Yes? It is a national foundation that provides scholarship for college tuition to every student. Buffalo, Syracuse, and Guilford County of North Carolina are example schools supported by this program. Say Yes is interested to enroll another city and Louisville is running for the nomination. The Superintendent of JCPS and the Louisville Mayor is trying to grab this opportunity. However, it is not easy to get into program because we have to show Say Yes that Louisville is trustworthy and will meet their expectation by raising about $100 million. 55,000 Degrees, a program, is helping us to reach our goal. After raising the amount, Say Yes will invest $15 million. If Louisville gets elected, then every student who graduates from JCPS gets free college tuition. This would be like winning the lottery for JCPS students and their families. They would not only get free tuition, but also get social/emotional counseling, medical services, and legal services for free. For middle class it is more affordable and beneficial because they give legal assistance, housing stability and loads for happiness. That means everybody can dream big as the dream has become cheap. Let’s work hard for the betterment of Louisville and show what Louisville can do.
Krima Salvi The vivacity of nature paired up with the intelligence of a machine might seem peculiar. Give it a minute and think about it. Wouldn't it be interesting to see a combination of nature and technology? It would be like a nail with metal nail polish; it would be like a tree with golden leaves. With years of experiments and knowledge, scientists at Harvard University have reached to a point where they are able to make a creature- a biobot. It is a part animal and part robot, and is currently called Ray. Ray is made from genetically modified heart cells, cardiomyocytes. It has been said, that nothing can beat the beauty of heart; it proves to be true because this beautiful organism, made from the components of heart. The elastic body, called the Elastomer body, resembles the shape of a ray, which is how it got it’s name. The skeleton is golden and shiny, but that’s the point: we care a lot about the beauty, although without mechanics, it is like cake without sugar.
So, in mechanics the function of the golden skeleton is to store the elastic energy. When light is exposed on cardiomyocytes (there are 200,000 present in the organism) they contract and the wings of the ray flaps to create electric signals. The way the cells are placed indicates the motion of the wings. The serpentine pattern of the placement of the cells gives a chance to each wing to tune in a different light pattern so that the biobot can turn. This way it moves like a robot by using electric signals. This might be used as a prop for entertainment now, but this could open doors to more efficient artificial hearts and artificial creatures. This tiny creature can become the backbone of the entire tissue engineering. However, it is difficult to take it out of the lab because this creature is too choosy about its environmental conditions and its food. It is picky like us. But soon we will be able to expand tissue engineering with the help of our talented scientists and maybe one of you will be there to give hand to those scientists. Tori Sobokta In light of increasing behavioral issues, JCPS has implemented a new policy thus utilizing Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) in the hopes of creating a constructive learning environment where responsible and respectable behavior is the norm. Rather than immediately suspending students that engage in violent and irrational behavior warranting suspension, PBIS utilizes curative and beneficial measures to promote student success. The goal of the new policy is to prevent students from losing instructional time when being disciplined and to encourage a safe, appropriate learning environment.
Kylie Hall Every year of school, there is always something new and different. This year, there is something new called SSR, which stands for student support room. SSR is located in room B120 and it is for students who have less than 3 periods of ISAP, students who are sent to tardy hall, and students that are just roaming the halls or not doing what they are supposed to be doing. The purpose of SSR is to reduce the amount of students in ISAP so that ISAP can work for the students who are in there all day or half days, instead of students just being held for one period. Students must complete a work packet before they leave SSR. The work packets are designed more aware of the choices that they make and the affects that they have on their high school careers. While students are in SSR, they cannot talk, and they are not allowed to have their phones out. There are also some new rules for ISAP. You are sent to ISAP if you have a referral and if you are going to be there for more than 3 periods. The new rules for ISAP are:
Harrison Quinton Even today, scientists still haven’t revealed the mystery behind memory. No one actually understands how it works. Memory, as we understand it, is when our brains document events that happen during each day and compile them in storage banks inside our minds. The brain is sort of like a supercomputer in the way it works. It performs the actions needed to stay alive and controls the body as it’s computer. Scientists understand other functions of the brain well enough, like our emotions, thought processes, and basic motor functions. But, memory is a bit more tricky to track and understand than other functions. No one is exactly sure how memory is stored or how it is processed in the mind. This makes it hard to understand or even start to study. Scientists only have been able to study what can be seen on the outer part of memory. Only what people have remembered, and not how, or why they remember what they do. Scientists now only know how to look at what people remember, but there has been vigorous study to be able to understand how memory works. Researchers may not know how memory actually works, but they are always getting ever closer to the answers of the human psyche. One day, we may actually understand the mysteries of memory.
Deshawna Burres Back in November when the crisis in Syria began there were quite a lot of controversy about should the America accept the refugees or not. So far no further arguments have been made other than it is a security risk. There have been no actual updates on this topic since November other than Kentucky Refugee organizations are accepting donations and or giving out community service hours for tutoring. So far the United States are taking in these refugees and the debate of closed borders are over. The last standing state that refuse to take in Syrian refugees was Indiana. Indiana since late December of 2015 have now decided to open its borders for the refugees. Twenty-one Syrian refugees will arrive here in the next two weeks, a figure expected to increase as the U.S. begins to take in an expanded number of refugees fleeing from Syria. The number of settling families in Kentucky now growing this past January of 2016. The refugees, from four families who fled to Jordan and Egypt, are part of a larger U.S. resettlement effort expected to bring as many as 10,000 Syrians to cities across the USA over the next few years, according to the U.S. State Department Allie Milliner Many students are often heard complaining about J-town in some way, shape, or form, however, a great deal of them would probably be highly disappointed if the district were to come in and fire off a bunch of teachers, change up the classes, and instate a ton of new rules. This is a highly plausible possibility since it has happened in a few of our fellow JCPS schools such as Doss, Fairdale, Fern Creek, Iroquois, etc. In order for a school to be labeled as persistently low achieving aka (PLA) school it must not meet its benchmarks for 3 years, have a less than 70% graduation rate at the end of the third year, and have test scores that don’t put them in the 5th percentile range. These schools have come out of PLA status, but J-town is about to become a PLA school, J-town was PLA during the 2014-15 school year, we are about to qualify as PLA for the 2015-16 school year, and after that we only have one more school year until the district comes in and takes over. Ways that we can avoid qualifying as a PLA school in future school years are simple, utilize our resources such as remediation and study skills which can be used for extra study time instead of just sleeping, as students we can try and make sure that we and all of our fellow J-town peers stick through the hard times and the stress and graduate, and we could all prep more for our end of year tests, even see if other students would like to get together to form study groups in order to fully achieve the best score that you can get on the test. J-town isn’t a great school, but it’s our school, and here is a chance to our teachers, staff, and keep J-town as our school. Malachi Laws In 2005, at age 18, Kesha was signed to producer Dr. Luke's label Kemosabe Records. January 27th, 2009 was the day Ke$ha first globally became noticed in the music industry with her voice being used as the chorus within hit single “Right Round” by rapper Flo Rida. Ke$ha soon after became hits with our music artist by featuring in their songs like “My First Kiss” by 3OH!3 later in that year. Soon in early 2010 Ke$ha released her iconic hit single “Tik Tok” that broke the record in the United States for the highest single week sales, selling 610,000 digital downloads. Later that same month Ke$ha released her album containing memorable songs like “Your Love Is My Drug” and “Blah Blah Blah” with 30H!3. Today. In early February, Ke$sha happen to have gone to court to break her contract from Sony and her contract from her producer Dr. Luke, only for the judge to deny her request. The reason why this news caused such an huge uproar was the fact that, allegedly Ke$ha was raped by her music producer Dr. Luke back when she very first signed to him. And now that Ke$ha practically being forced by law and a contract she will have to work with not only Sony, but the guy and producer who had raped her. This uproar has reached out to other successful female music artist such as Adele who publically announced it on the Brit Awards 2016, Taylor Swift who donated $250,00, and Lady Gaga who had written and performed a song based on young females who are victims of rape called “Till It Happens To You” also on the Brit Awards 2016. Many have said that if Ke$ha was raped in 2005, why is she saying everything about her being raped now in 2016, 11 years later after the incident, but this should be an example for young women to be cautious of their surroundings.
