Sarah Howard If you have somehow been spared from the harsh media-overlord that Pokémon Go is, Pokémon Go is widely popular location-based augmented reality game made by Niatonic for iOS and Android devices. Players use the GPS on their mobile device to locate, capture, battle, and train virtual creatures called Pokémon. This is a virtual reality game but the actions this game are causing is very real. Pokémon go is causing gangs, car accidents, turf wars, murders, and even some conspiracies have aroused about the game.
The game allows people to experience the thrill of being able to be a Pokémon trainer. A lot of competitiveness has sprouted because everyone wants “To be the very best.” One of the best examples of this are the teams, Mystic, Valor, and Instinct, of which you can become a part of. Once you reach level five the game lets you choose between team Instinct, a team that is instinct driven, team Valor, team, that values strength over everything, and team Mystic, that values brains over bronze. Once you choose one of these teams you are not only fighting to become the best trainer but you are now doing it for the teams you choose and against the others, which blossoms the competitiveness. USA Today has been keeping up with the multiple crimes linked to the game, I have chosen the ones that jump out to me the most. In Missouri there was a string of armed robberies linked to four teens that used the lure feature of Pokémon Go to lure the unfortunate players. In Baltimore, a man was driving while playing and he crashed into a cop car. Outside San Diego, two men ignored warning signs, climbed the fence and fell from cliff. These two men were rescued by the local fire department with ropes and harnesses. A young male in Guatemala, Jerso Lopez de Leon, was shot and killed for breaking into a home to catch a Pokémon. The top 5 conspiracies of Pokémon Go were the most shocking to me. The first of the conspiracies was that the reality game is the big wireless carriers scheme to have customers pay more for data. Another one was that the game is to keep us distracted from the new so that we do not riot. And finally, the game is an agent of capitalism to get us into stores and buy stuff.

Valorie Severns This Olympic season, the United States took home a total of 86 medals, 28 of them being gold. With breaking and setting new world records, it seems as if the US Olympic results could not get better. Olympic training athletes spend countless hours upon hours working towards their dream, to compete in the world wide Olympics. The lucky ones will reach their goal and will bring home gold, creating tons and tons of celebration nationwide.
Hundreds of female and male swimmers train to make the national swimming team. Once they make the national team, they have a pretty good chance of making the Olympic team as well. Swimmers must be at least 16 years of age, or turning 16 within the calendar year, to compete in the Olympics. The average age for men swimmers in the Olympics is around 24 and for women it’s around 22 or 23. Katie Ledecky is the youngest Olympian on the team at just 19. The US swimming team brought home an astounding 33 medals, 16 being gold. If you’ve seen any amount of news headlines or media, you would know that the Girls Gymnastic team dominates the game. Simone Biles is easiest the most well-known new member of the group with the fact that she has her own floor move named after her. She has a running start into a round-off back handspring then pulls a double lay half out, and nails it every time. This was one of the factors that won her 4 gold medals. Returning gold medalist Gabby Duglas has also had her own headlines, but not quite for the same reason. She had a controversial action when the picture sparked the internet of her not putting her hand over her heart for the national anthem. But in the long run, the US women’s gymnastics took home a total of 12 medals, 4 being gold as well. US Olympic teams definitely represented by taking athletes as a whole and showing people across the world what the US brings to the table. Hard training athletes each year work towards showing and competing for gold, and bringing home gold, to the home of the brave. Krima Salvi Money! Money! Money! Yes, you guessed it right. The matter is all about money. Have you heard about Say Yes? It is a national foundation that provides scholarship for college tuition to every student. Buffalo, Syracuse, and Guilford County of North Carolina are example schools supported by this program. Say Yes is interested to enroll another city and Louisville is running for the nomination. The Superintendent of JCPS and the Louisville Mayor is trying to grab this opportunity. However, it is not easy to get into program because we have to show Say Yes that Louisville is trustworthy and will meet their expectation by raising about $100 million. 55,000 Degrees, a program, is helping us to reach our goal. After raising the amount, Say Yes will invest $15 million. If Louisville gets elected, then every student who graduates from JCPS gets free college tuition. This would be like winning the lottery for JCPS students and their families. They would not only get free tuition, but also get social/emotional counseling, medical services, and legal services for free. For middle class it is more affordable and beneficial because they give legal assistance, housing stability and loads for happiness. That means everybody can dream big as the dream has become cheap. Let’s work hard for the betterment of Louisville and show what Louisville can do.
Krima Salvi The vivacity of nature paired up with the intelligence of a machine might seem peculiar. Give it a minute and think about it. Wouldn't it be interesting to see a combination of nature and technology? It would be like a nail with metal nail polish; it would be like a tree with golden leaves. With years of experiments and knowledge, scientists at Harvard University have reached to a point where they are able to make a creature- a biobot. It is a part animal and part robot, and is currently called Ray. Ray is made from genetically modified heart cells, cardiomyocytes. It has been said, that nothing can beat the beauty of heart; it proves to be true because this beautiful organism, made from the components of heart. The elastic body, called the Elastomer body, resembles the shape of a ray, which is how it got it’s name. The skeleton is golden and shiny, but that’s the point: we care a lot about the beauty, although without mechanics, it is like cake without sugar.
So, in mechanics the function of the golden skeleton is to store the elastic energy. When light is exposed on cardiomyocytes (there are 200,000 present in the organism) they contract and the wings of the ray flaps to create electric signals. The way the cells are placed indicates the motion of the wings. The serpentine pattern of the placement of the cells gives a chance to each wing to tune in a different light pattern so that the biobot can turn. This way it moves like a robot by using electric signals. This might be used as a prop for entertainment now, but this could open doors to more efficient artificial hearts and artificial creatures. This tiny creature can become the backbone of the entire tissue engineering. However, it is difficult to take it out of the lab because this creature is too choosy about its environmental conditions and its food. It is picky like us. But soon we will be able to expand tissue engineering with the help of our talented scientists and maybe one of you will be there to give hand to those scientists. Tori Sobokta In light of increasing behavioral issues, JCPS has implemented a new policy thus utilizing Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) in the hopes of creating a constructive learning environment where responsible and respectable behavior is the norm. Rather than immediately suspending students that engage in violent and irrational behavior warranting suspension, PBIS utilizes curative and beneficial measures to promote student success. The goal of the new policy is to prevent students from losing instructional time when being disciplined and to encourage a safe, appropriate learning environment.
